Christmas Decorations Around The World

Even though many nations on our blue planet are at odds with each other and not all really celebrate Christmas, many do try and brighten up their lives with some sparkling Christmas decorations and illuminations.

Here are some examples

USA:
Completely OTT as you would expect

France:

Always with Le Tour Eiffel
Germany:
That gesture looks familiar somehow
Denmark:
The Danes.  Typical. Only one thing on their minds.
Russia:
USSR, Sorry, sorry, The Russian Republic
Brazil:

Let's clear some more rain forest
Spain:
Barcelona

Portugal:
Funchal
Singapore:
Classy but commercial
Philippines:
Too much like the USA?

Norway:
Lights? We don't need lights.

Mexico:
Will this get us over the wall senior?
Monaco:
A touch of Grace?
 Ireland (Belfast):
Feck
 Ireland (Dublin):
Bubbles
Finland:
Really, really cold
Sweden:
IKEA it's not.  Gingerbread house?

Holland:
Stereotypical? Moi?
UK:
Cheap?  Piss Off.
Argentina:
Wow, really Christmasy, NOT
Italy:
Restrained.  You can say a lot about the Roman Catholic Church, but they do have good taste.  Especially in choirboys.
New Zealand:
Really celebrates what NZ is all about

North/South Korea:
Duck

  1. Aw, some of those are lovely. I wouldn't dream of doing a tacky display like you show for the US, but when we drive around looking for Christmas lights, we like the tacky ones best.

  2. Someone get that poor girl some clothes! I like the Ruskie one best, looks like it could be Christmas all year with those onion tops.

  3. Finland gets my vote. Ever since the Griswolds and Youtube the US displays have been awful. There's one neighborhood in Brooklyn NY- Dyker Heights, an Italian nabe- that competes with moving figures, whole choirs and Scrooge displays. That's been that way since I can remember but these latest schlocky lights are crap.

  4. Patience_Crabstick: I hate to say it, but so do we. Just because something's completely tasteless doesn't mean you can't enjoy it. Probably by making terrible and cutting comments about the mindset and character of the person(s) responsible.

YONKS: Don't blame me, I got it from an art-farty website in Denmark. You couldn't pay me enough to stand about in the nude holding some Christmas lights. Mind you, in that case, you couldn't pay people enough to look at the resulting photos.

Austan: I agree Finland is subdued, tasteful and pretty. I've never seen an animated Christmas light display in NZ, although I've seen a few in the UK. Tackiness doesn't even come close.

  5. Is the budget for Christmas lights in NZ a bit short this year?

Funchal - I used to live there. The lights are just jaw-droppingly beautiful, all along the main road and the lovely long promenade of the harbour. Oooh, you've got me all wistful now!

  6. looby: No, I was trying to be ironic.

Oh, you're so lucky. There's something about the Spanish/Portugese lifestyle that is so relaxing.
