Literary Meme

I had never heard of a "meme" until I saw this on Fatuous Observations, so I thought I'd try one myself, using Patience_Crabstick's as a template.(with her permission)

1. What author do you own the most books by?
Equal numbers of David Weber, John Ringo and Robert Heinlein. (If I get my copy of "The Moon is a Harsh Mistress" back from my friend)
2. What book do you own the most copies of?
Arthur C. Clark. At one point I had 3 copies of "The City and the Stars"

3. Did it bother you that both those questions ended with prepositions?
No. Yes. Maybe.  I get confused.  What's a preposition?
4. What fictional character are you secretly in love with?

 Podkayne

5. What book have you read the most times in your life (excluding picture books read to children, i.e. Goodnight Moon does not count)?
Starship Troopers (Robert Heinlein)
6. What was your favorite book when you were ten years old?
Foundation (Issac Asimov)
7. What is the worst book you’ve read in the past year?
Contact with Chaos (Michael Z. Williamson) Really disappointed as his other books were great.
8. If you could force everyone to read one book, what would it be?
The Last Centurion (John Ringo) Get real or die.
9. Who deserves to win the next Nobel Prize for Literature?
Absolutely no idea.  Every one that's won in the past is unreadable.
10. What book would you most like to see made into a movie?
The Foundation Trilogy (Issac Asimov)
11. What book would you least like to see made into a movie?
The Hobbit.  I have a very clear mental picture of the world inhabited by Bilbo, so please leave it alone.
12. Describe your weirdest dream involving a writer, book, or literary character.
After I read a particularly steamy sequence from a Ringo novel (Choosers of the Slain) I had a really weird fantasy dream involving an art teacher at my school.  I'm still in therapy.
13. What is the most lowbrow book you’ve read as an adult?
The DaVinci Code (Dan Brown)
What a pile of crap
14. What is the most difficult book you’ve ever read?
C++ in 24 hours (They lie. It's nearer 156 hours, minimum)
15. What is the most obscure Shakespeare play you’ve seen?
Alas, I've only seen well-known Shakespeare.

16. Do you prefer the French or the Russians?
French.  They write about cuisine with a real heart.  I don't know what the reason is behind Russian literature, but it's definitely not enjoyment.
17. Roth or Updike?

Neither.  Boring.
18. David Sedaris or Dave Eggers?
Who?

19. Shakespeare, Milton or Chaucer?

Chaucer, because he could write smut, then Milton for the imagination, then Shakespeare for the laughs.
20. Austen or Eliot?

Neither.  Both awful, boring.
21. What is the biggest or most embarrassing gap in your reading?
The so called classics.  Dickens is boring, as is almost every bloody classic I've tried.  Victor Hugo and Jules Verne being the exceptions. Maybe JM Barrie as well.
22. What is your favorite novel?

For sheer amusement, "Wasp" or "Next of Kin" (Eric Frank Russell), but my overall all time favourite is "The Curse of Chalion" (Lois McMaster Bujold)

23. Play?

Reading plays is unnatural.
24. Poem?

Reading poems is unnatural.
25. Essay?
How I spent my Holidays in the Sudetenland (A. Hitler)

26. Short story?

Nightfall (Isaac Asimov)

27. Work of nonfiction?

A Short History Of Nearly Everything (Bill Bryson)

28. Who is your favorite writer?

Overall, Robert Heinlein,or maybe David Brin, or maybe John Varley, or maybe Lois McMaster Bujold.  It depends on my mood. Oh, oh, I almost forgot Iain M. Banks and Charles Stross.
29. Who is the most overrated writer alive today?
John Grisham and Dan F*cking Brown
30. What is your desert island book?

How to build a radio transmitter using coconut shells, fish bones and pubic hairs. (I.M.Getin Outahere)
31. And…what are you reading right now?

Scholar (L.E. Modessit)

  1. Well, Runner did once ask him, as he suggested items for prizegiving (I was there), if there was anything he couldn't do, but I thought she was being sarcastic.

  2. There is absolutely no, repeat no connection between Ringo the Arrogant and John Ringo the novelist and ex-US Navy SEAL.
I do believe that Runner was being ironic rather than sarcastic.

  3. "No, it was definitely sarcasm."

    Excellent.

  4. Austan: Thanks, I've never read (actually tried to read) such an over-hyped piece of rubbish. I ended up throwing the poor book against the wall.

  5. I knew your answers to these questions would be very different from mine! My mom liked Robert Heinlein but I have never read him.

Isn't Peter Jackson making a Hobbit movie even as we speak? I think he did a good job with LOTR, so maybe the Hobbit won't be tragic. The cartoon version sure is.

  6. Bit concerned to hear you admit to this fantasy dream involving an art teacher TSB. One from NLHS? A pretty one I hope if so, and not to my horror the one I hope it is not, being the current HOF. (That would be seriously kinky and explain the need for therapy).

  7. Patience_Crabstick: Everyone's different.

Vive la difference, otherwise it would be a very boring world.

I loved LOTR, but I read the Hobbit when I was a lot younger, and I'm scared that Sir Peter's vision isn't as colourful or as full of magic as mine is/was.

    VG: I plead the Fifth.

  8. You are both weird and twisted! I just saw the trailer for The Hobbit which will be released next December. Unlike you I can't wait for the film. They did such a good job of LOTR I don't see why it wouldn't be as good. Bah humbug!

  9. YONKS: Thanks, you say the nicest things.
I don't say the Hobbit will be bad, I actually believe it will be very good, but I've had an image of the original Shire in my head for years, and I don't want it to change.

Bah Humbug however, gets my vote.

    Why do you say weird?

Was it the Desert Island Book?

  10. Hmmm... this is the second time this "art teacher" has turned up here in recent weeks. That "dream" you had has clearly etched a very clear path through your neurotransmitters (and something else as well by the sounds of it!)

  11. looby: Well yes. Possibly. But I don't like to talk about it. A man of my mature years shouldn't have to worry about sticky sheets.

  12. Do you have toe thumbs?

    Replies
    1. No Anonymous, I don't have toe thumbs.

Actually I'm not really sure what a toe thumb is.

I do however have toe chese.

  13. What a small world. That's my hubby's meme pic (no joke) and that was the first pic I ever saw of him, and the first time I'd heard of a meme too. Needless to say I was a wee bit nervous for the first few months or so of dating...
